The lioness the oryx and the boy who leads

"By the way , the roots of anti-Semitism, which is the real thread of the history since antique Roman Empire are just in this circumstance that Judaism is the religion, which provides the most Democratic and reasonable approach to all social developments and, therefore, was always hated by those in power who hated and fought democracy."

Assuming your statement is sincere could you please explain how you reconcile such a state with some of its own teachings that are clearly undemocratic? Personally I don’t think racism, slavery and financial exploitation are values that one should base a democracy on.  How odd that a people who escaped from the bonds of slavery in Egypt should settle in another land and make slaves of others and exploit them.

Revelation 2 (KJV)
9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
14 But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumblingblock before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.

The Bible Deity and Abraham Lincoln
by Joseph Lewis from his book The Ten Commandments
“While we are speaking of the liberation of the Hebrews from bondage, it will not be irrelevant to mention Abraham Lincoln's efforts to free the Negro slaves in this country. By way of comparison, Lincoln's task was just as arduous as that of the God of Israel; in fact, it was more so, for Lincoln was only a common mortal. He had to combat others stronger than himself. He also had to fight in the open against the invisible foes of racial, political and social prejudices. He had to fight the Bible's own pronouncement that slavery existed by divine approval. In support of the institution of slavery, ministers of religion consistently quoted scriptural edicts, such as Leviticus, Chapter 25, verses 44 to 46:

44   Both thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have, shall be of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids.
45   Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they begat in your land: and they shall be your possession.
46   And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel, ye shall not rule one over another with rigour.

Isaiah 1 :: King James Version (KJV)
2   Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the LORD hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me.
3   The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider.
4   Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.

What events and circumstances caused the British government to publicly back the Zionist dream of a homeland for the dispersed Hebrews?

Historians debate and wrangle over the degree to which these three factors influenced the British cabinet to issue the Balfour Declaration. However, none of the three, nor all of them together, seem to be sufficient reasons for the positive British view. When we consider the Christian beliefs of the major members of the cabinet, we can conclude that the biblical teaching of Israel's return to Zion was the main reason that the cabinet was moved to issue the Balfour Declaration.

Another member of the cabinet, Jan Christian Smuts from South Africa, earlier had fought the British in the Boer War. Steeped in the Bible, Smuts strongly supported the Zionist ideas. He later wrote in his personal memoirs, "The people of South Africa have been brought up almost entirely on Jewish tradition. The Old Testament has been the very marrow of Dutch culture here in South Africa." He had been brought up to believe that "the day will come when the words of the prophets will become true, and Israel will return to its own land."

“Power always thinks it has a great soul and vast views beyond the comprehension of the weak; and that it is doing God's service when it is violating all his laws.”

1910: Louis Botha and fellow Afrikaner Gen. Jan Smuts form the South African Party (SAP) in 1910, with Botha as prime minister under a constitution that provides no bill of rights. Deep-seated fears of the African majority spur the SAP to ensure white supremacy through racist legislation limiting social, economic, and personal freedom for blacks (Africans), people of mixed race (Coloreds), and Indians.

Deuteronomy 23
19   Thou shalt not lend upon usury to thy brother; usury of money, usury of victuals, usury of any thing that is lent upon usury:
20   Unto a stranger thou mayest lend upon usury; but unto thy brother thou shalt not lend upon usury: that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all that thou settest thine hand to in the land whither thou goest to possess it.

Matthew 4

1. The practice of lending money and charging the borrower interest, especially at an exorbitant or illegally high rate.

Matthew 6 :: King James Version (KJV)
19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Daniel 9 :: King James Version (KJV)
5   We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments:
6   Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.
7   O LORD, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of faces, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee.
8   O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee.
9   To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him;
10   Neither have we obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.
11   Yea, all Israel have transgressed thy law, even by departing, that they might not obey thy voice; therefore the curse is poured upon us, and the oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God, because we have sinned against him.

I think the garbage in Leviticus and Deuteronomy was written by people who were selfish, corrupted by money and power and interested in justifying and maintaining power over people different then them (and likely their own people but in a different manner).  These texts formalize and condone behavior that so obviously runs contrary to every notion of fairness and decency. (golden rule not clear enough?)  Founding a nation or a religion on, or influenced by, such principles cannot logically lead to harmonious relationships with other people.  Such a state could only maintain it's existence through the use of force.  (Here is a link that provides both historical evidence and reasoning that others have historically recognized this.  It involves the views of a group known as the Essenes see here as well.)  Interestingly at least two other books of the bible acknowledge this corruption and warn the people of Israel that they would suffer the consequences of this corruption.

Orthodox Anti-Zionism
Until the Nazi Holocaust, much of the Orthodoxy was antagonistic to the Zionist aspiration of establishing a national home for the Jewish people in the Land of Israel. In large measure this opposition was less to Zionism itself than to the Zionists, for most of the Zionist activists were secularists who rejected the traditional authority of the Rabbis in favour of "foreign" ideologies such as socialism and nationalism.

Judaism And Zionism Are Not The Same Thing
Jews United Against Zionism
We would like to take a few minutes of your time to prevent you from making a terrible mistake that may have disastrous results for many.

You have always without a doubt heard and read much about the political crises in the Middle East in which the State of Israel plays a central role. This is, in fact, an ongoing series of crises with potential to bring the greatest misfortune on the entire world. Tragically many believe that Zionism and Judaism are identical. Thus they conclude that the entire Jewish people is responsible for the actions of the Zionist government and the world crises which emanates from it. This is a Grave Error!

The truth is that the Jewish faith and Zionism are two very different philosophies. They are as opposite as day and night. The Jewish people have existed for thousands of years. In their two thousand years of Divinely decreed exile no Jew ever sought to end this exile and establish independent political sovereignty anywhere. The people's sole purpose was the study and fulfillment of the Divine commandments of the Torah.

The Zionist movement created the Israeli state. The latter is a persuasion less than one hundred years old. Its essential goal was and is to change the nature of the Jewish people from that of a religious entity to a political movement. From Zionism's inception the spiritual leaders of the Jewish people stood in staunch opposition to it.

To this day Torah Jewry remains forever loyal to its faith. Zionists want the world to believe that they are the representatives of the entire Jewish people. This is false! The Jewish people never chose them as their leaders.

The Zionists have deceived many well meaning Jewish people via terror, trickery and false propaganda. They have at their disposal the use of a nearly universally subservient media. Whoever attempts to criticize them puts his livelihood and, at times, his very life in danger.

The Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel
by Prof. E. Gutmann
The Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel was approved at a festive session of the People’s Council, comprised of representatives of the yishuv (the Jewish community in Palestine) and the Zionist movement, on Friday, May 14, 1948, several hours before the British Mandate for Palestine came to an end.

The Declaration consists of seven sections, and stipulates six matters:

It asserts the natural right of the Jewish people to be like all other peoples, exercising self-determination in its sovereign state.

It proclaims the establishment of a Jewish state in Eretz Israel, named "the State of Israel."...

Palestinians never had either a country, nor any distinct culture or language of their own
Posted on AUGUST-2-2001
...The hard truth, which most Israelis and Zionists refuse to accept, is that Zionism evolved in response to the rise of Europe's nationalism and anti-Semitism in the late 19th century, especially in Tsarist Russia (Pale States), France during the Dreyfus affair, and Germany after WW I. Similarly, Palestinian nationalism evolved in response to Zionism and, most importantly, in the intent of its realization in the Balfour Declaration by the British. This central fact was well articulated by David Ben-Gurion (Israel's 1st Prime Minister) and Moshe Sharett (Israel's 1st Foreign Minister), they wrote:

-   In February 1937, Ben-Gurion was on the brink of a far reaching conclusion, that the Arabs of Palestine were a separate people, distinct from other Arabs and deserving of self-determination.
He stated:
"The right which the Arabs in Palestine have is one due to the inhabitants of any country . . . because they live here, and not because they are Arabs . . . The Arab inhabitants of Palestine should enjoy all the rights of citizens and all political rights, not only as individuals, but as a national community, just like the Jews." (
Shabtai Teveth, p. 170)

-   In 1936 (soon after the outbreak of the Intifada I),
Ben-Gurion wrote in his diary:
"The Arabs fear of our power is intensifying, [Arabs] see exactly the opposite of what we see. It doesn't matter whether or not their view is correct....They see [Jewish] immigration on a giant scale .... they see the Jews fortify themselves economically .. They see the best lands passing our hands. They see England identify with Zionism. .....[Arabs are] fighting dispossession ... The fear is not of losing land, but of losing homeland of the Arab people, which others want to turn it into the homeland of the Jewish people.  There is a fundamental conflict. We and they want the same thing: We both want Palestine ..... By our very presence and progress here, [we] have matured the [Arab] movement."
Righteous Victims, p.136)

-   In 1938,
Ben-Gurion also stated against the backdrop of Intifada I:
"When we say that the Arabs are the aggressors and we defend ourselves ---- that is ONLY half the truth. As regards our security and life we defend ourselves. ...But the fighting is only one aspect of the conflict, which is in its essence a political one. And politically we are the aggressors and they defend themselves." (
Righteous Victims,, p. 652)

-   In 1936,
Moshe Sharett spoke in similar vein:
"Fear is the main factor in [Palestinian] Arab politics. . . . There is no Arab who is not harmed by Jews' entry into Palestine." (
Righteous Victims, p.136)

Isaiah 65 :: King James Version (KJV)
1   I am sought of them that asked not for me; I am found of them that sought me not: I said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation that was not called by my name.

2   I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts;
3   A people that provoketh me to anger continually to my face; that sacrificeth in gardens, and burneth incense upon altars of brick;
11   But ye are they that forsake the LORD, that forget my holy mountain, that prepare a table for that troop, and that furnish the drink offering unto that number.
12   Therefore will I number you to the sword, and ye shall all bow down to the slaughter: because when I called, ye did not answer; when I spake, ye did not hear; but did evil before mine eyes, and did choose that wherein I delighted not.

Israeli Independence Day: Reflection, Not Fireworks
Wed Apr 17, 8:53 AM ET
KFAR SAVA, Israel, April 16 Eyal Zimmerman, the shaggy-haired waiter at the coffee shop down the block, believed in peace, the young men said. But he also did his duty as a reservist in the Israeli Army, and he died in the ferocious fighting earlier this month in the Jenin refugee camp, in the West Bank.

Now his picture sits above flickering votive candles in the Coffee Tree. There are 23 candles, the same number as his age, and the tally of the Israeli dead in Jenin.

His former customers, his contemporaries, somberly said, when asked how they felt, that they had absorbed the loss. "You don't feel anymore," replied Liran Kehat, 22.

Or Raveh, also 22 and himself just returned from the fighting in Jenin, put in, "You're kind of used to it; it's sad all the time."

"I just feel tired," Mr. Raveh said. "I think everybody does." But, like his friends, Mr. Raveh said he also felt he was left no choice by the multiplying suicide bombings other than to keep fighting for a Jewish state, whose chances for survival after 54 years he sometimes doubted.

Flag sales are soaring, as Israelis rally behind their sweeping invasion of the West Bank. At the same time, Independence Day celebrations here and in other places were canceled, for fear of attacks.

"The Situation," as the state of conflict with the Palestinians is universally referred to here, has become as grim as most people can remember. In interviews in this middle-class Tel Aviv suburb and elsewhere, Israelis said they felt isolated, believing that their fight for survival had been deliberately misconstrued as brutality and oppression by an unsympathetic world.

"People around the world never liked us, because we are Jews," said Shai Shiloach, 20, who paused on the sidewalk here after buying tickets for an Independence Day party tonight. In simply deciding to go out for an evening, he had weighed and reconciled himself to risks most young people would never have to consider. "If we are going to die, we are going to die," he said, shrugging.

The continuing attacks here have left emotions raw in the city. Nihad Yassim, 33, and his pregnant wife, Fatmah, 32, an Israeli Arab couple, rushed from their table at the restaurant next door to assist a wounded soldier who was writhing in pain on the sidewalk.

"My husband tried to help the soldier, but a civilian nearby jumped on us because my husband was speaking to me in Arabic and the man suspected him of being connected to the bomber," said Fatmah, who is seven months pregnant and was suffering from contractions at the hospital after the incident. "I was deeply hurt by this. It's as if its not my country and I don't have the right to live in it."

Saul Eviatar, whose infant son was being treated for shock at the hospital, told a small group of reporters, "I feel lucky I'm alive, but I feel unlucky this [conflict] is continuing with no answers. . . . The time we decide to leave the settlements and the West Bank and the whole concept of territorial occupation, it will be over."

"The press should not use that," interjected hospital spokeswoman Edith Lieberman, who was hovering nearby saying she disagreed with his sentiments.

"I'm sorry, that's how I feel," said Eviatar turning and walking away.

“We are told "most Americans understand very little about Islam." Emerson, however, only adds to the misunderstanding. We are not told that Islam is the religion based on God's message conveyed by a line of prophets including Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad. We are also not told that Islam recognizes Muslims, Jews, and Christians as "People of the Book."

Muslims, Islam and Christianity
”Muslims are required by Allah to believe in all the Prophets including Jesus (Isa), and John, the Baptist (Yahya), Peace be upon them. Quran has asks us to believe in all the books revealed to all the Prophets as well. The book given to Jesus is called Injeel in the Quran. Quran asks Muslims to give special position to Christians as people of the Book.”

Jesus Prophet of Islam (1st Edition)
Muhammad Ataur-Rahman
”This book examines Jesus as a prophet teaching the Unity of God, and the historical collapse of Christianity as it abandoned his teaching. The author sketches the dramatic picture of the original followers of Jesus who affirmed Unity. What emerges is that "Christianity" is the fiction that replaced their truth. A work that covers the Gospel of Barnabas, the Gospel of Hermes, the Shephard, early and later Unitarian Christians, Jesus in the Gospels and in the Qur'an and Hadith. The author clearly shows the idea of Jesus as part of a Trinity was a Greek Pagan idea adopted by early Christian mission-aries to gain converts among the Greek, and did not become a widely accepted Christian doctrine until after the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D.”

Muslims respect and revere Jesus (peace be upon Him) , and await his Second Coming. They consider him one of the greatest of God's Messengers to mankind. A Muslim never refers to him simply as 'Jesus' (peace be upon Him) , but always adds the phrase 'upon him be peace'. The Qur'an confirms his virgin birth (a chapter of the Qur'an is entitled 'Mary'), and Mary is considered the purest woman in all creation. The Qur'an describes the Annunciation as follows:
³Behold! the angels said: "O Mary! Allah hath chosen thee and purified thee; chosen thee above the women of all nations. "O Mary! worship thy Lord devoutly; prostrate thyself and bow down (in prayer) with those who bow down."
(Qur'an: Translation of the meaning, 3:42-43)

"To answer your claims about what the bible says...Back in those times Israel, even though having terrible kings at times and splitting up into Judah later on, was a nation that was the most dedicated to God. These "strangers" God talks about are the pagans that usually live outside of Israel but do make their way into the country. God wanted His nation to be as free from sin as possible, so he did not want anyone in the nation to deal with anyone outside of the nation, so that sin would not be brought into the society."
- watching_water_boil

I see. So ‘God’ has a serious problem with ‘pagans’? This is an interesting assertion when one investigates the origin and usage of the word ‘God’ in Genesis.

“You can safely assume you have created God in your own image when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do.”
- Ann Lamont

pa-gan (pay'guhn) n. (Random House electronic dictionary 1992)
1. one of a people or community observing a polytheistic religion, as the ancient Romans and Greeks.
2. a person who is not a Christian, Jew, or Muslim; heathen.

Asimov's Guide to the Bible : The Old and New Testaments/Two Volumes in One
“The Hebrew word, translated here as God, is ‘Elohim’ and that is a plural form which would ordinarily (if tradition were defied) be translated ‘god’s.”

1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
11:7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.

Could you please clarify for me what problems ‘God’ might have with the teachings of this ‘pagan’ especially when contrasted with the passages from Leviticus and Deuteronomy?

The Council of Nicea
©1996, Richard Hooker, Washington State University
Perhaps the most important task that Constantine undertook was the Council of Nicea which was called largely to arbitrate the conflict between the western church and the Arians and to decide the question of the relationship between imperial power and the church. The Council dealth with more than this controversy, however, and made major doctrinal decisions that were meant to apply to the whole of the Christian world. This council is important as the first attempt to centralize doctrinal authority among Christians.

The Council officially ruled against Arianism, but the movement continued until the emperor Theodosius I officially condemned it and rooted it out in 383 and 384. The basic orthodoxy of Christianity was instantiated in what came to be called the Nicene creed, the basic statement of belief for orthodox Christianity. Constantine accomplished more, however, for the Nicene council also ratified his own power and Christianity would begin the long struggle, lasting to this day, between the anti-political ideas of Jesus of Nazareth and the Christianity that is compromised to allow for human authority and power.

The Athanasian Creed
The Catholic Encyclopedia, Volume II
One of the symbols of the Faith approved by the Church and given a place in her liturgy, is a short, clear exposition of the doctrines of the Trinity and the Incarnation, with a passing reference to several other dogmas. Unlike most of the other creeds, or symbols, it deals almost exclusively with these two fundamental truths, which it states and restates in terse and varied forms so as to bring out unmistakably the trinity of the Persons of God, and the twofold nature in the one Divine Person of Jesus Christ. At various points the author calls attention to the penalty incurred by those who refuse to accept any of the articles therein set down.

Athanasian Creed
Rev. Michael H. Anderson, MDiv.
...While the Creed has always been attributed to St. Athanasius (d 373 AD), it was unknown in the Eastern Churches until the 12th century and thus it is unlikely he is the author. …Current theory suggests it was composed in southern France in the 5th century.
QUICUMQUE vult salvus esse, ante omnia opus est, ut teneat catholicam fidem: WHOEVER wishes to be saved must, above all, keep the Catholic faith.
Quam nisi quisque integram inviolatamque servaverit, absque dubio in aeternam peribit. For unless a person keeps this faith whole and entire, he will undoubtedly be lost forever.
Fides autem catholica haec est: ut unum Deum in Trinitate, et Trinitatem in unitate veneremur. This is what the catholic faith teaches: we worship one God in the Trinity and the Trinity in unity.

The Nicene Creed as approved by the Council of Constantinople (A.D. 381)

Usually associated with the Council of Constantinople this symbol is an expansion and revision of the earlier Creed of Nicaea with which it is often confused. This is the creed recited in churches.
The Nicene Creed -- Constantinopolitan Creed -- Creed of 150 Fathers

Matthew 6:5-8 :: King James Version (KJV)
5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

Why Are Gnostic Teachings Missing?
Copyright © February 2, 2001, William C. Kiefert
At great cost to all of us, Jesus' private/Gnostic teachings were "outlawed" with the Roman Emperor Constantine's decision to make Christianity the state religion. For along with that decision came his command that all Christian bishops choose between Jesus' public/Orthodox and private/Gnostic teachings. In this way Constantine could unite the empire under one official church doctrine. His command was carried out at the Council of Nicaea (325 AD) in the document Christians call the Nicene Creed and its shorter version, the Apostles' Creed. In effect, the Nicene Creed, which reflects Jesus' public teachings, became the one official doctrine of Orthodox Christianity, and in turn, made his private Gnostic teachings an outlawed heresy.

Soon after the Council, "an imperial edict ordered that all books by Arius [the principal advocate of Jesus' Gnostic teachings at Nicaea], and others like him, should be burned, and made concealment of such a book punishable by death." …

The Emperor is long dead. We no longer need to live in the dark ignorance of Constantine's shadow. We can now examine for ourselves every aspect of Jesus' outlawed Gnostic teachings, and bring back into our lives that part of Jesus' ministry which Constantine stole from us.

The Gospel of Thomas
3. Jesus said, "If your leaders say to you, 'Look, the (Father's) kingdom is in the sky,' then the birds of the sky will precede you. If they say to you, 'It is in the sea,' then the fish will precede you. Rather, the (Father's) kingdom is within you and it is outside you.
When you know yourselves, then you will be known, and you will understand that you are children of the living Father. But if you do not know yourselves, then you live in poverty, and you are the poverty."

Plato: The Allegory of the Cave, from The Republic
"At the end of the passage, Plato expresses another of his favorite ideas: that education is not a process of putting knowledge into empty minds, but of making people realize that which they already know. This notion that truth is somehow embedded in our minds was also powerfully influential for many centuries."

When they lose their sense of awe,
people turn to religion.
When they no longer trust themselves,
they begin to depend upon authority.

Therefore the Master steps back
so that people won’t be confused.
He teaches without a teaching,
so that people will have nothing to learn.

The Gospel According to Mary
25) Peter said to him, Since you have explained everything to us, tell us this also: What is the sin of the world?
26) The Savior said There is no sin, but it is you who make sin when you do the things that are like the nature of adultery, which is called sin.

The Basis of Zarathusta’s Teachings
“He [Zarathusthra] was wise enough to recognize that all the motives of human beings are based on action and reaction. Because, the receiver of every good deed in this world will react accordingly with the good behavior. Therefore, in the realm of interaction, if human beings act favorably, they receive favorable reaction and vice versa. In this regard, if a person robs another one, he should not be surprised when some day he will be robbed as well.”

All the Shah's Men: An American Coup and the Roots of Middle East Terror
Half a century ago, the United States overthrew a Middle Eastern government for the first time. The victim was Mohammad Mossadegh, the democratically elected prime minister of Iran. Although the coup seemed a success at first, today it serves as a chilling lesson about the dangers of foreign intervention.

"It is not far-fetched," Kinzer asserts in this book, "to draw a line from Operation Ajax through the Shah’s repressive regime and the Islamic Revolution to the fireballs that engulfed the World Trade Center in New York."

Blowback - The Costs and Consequences of American Empire by Chalmers Johnson, Henry Holt, 2000
The term "blowback," which officials of the Central Intelligence Agency first invented for their own internal use, is starting to circulate among students of international relations. It refers to the unintended consequences of policies that were kept secret from the American people. What the daily press reports as the malign acts of "terrorists" or "drug lords" or "rogue states" or "illegal arms merchants" often turn out to be blowback from earlier American operations.

Osama bin Laden: …“America and its allies are massacring us in Palestine, Chechenya, Kashmir and Iraq. The Muslims have the right to attack America in reprisal. The Islamic Shariat says Muslims should not live in the land of the infidel for long. The Sept 11 attacks were not targeted at women and children. The real targets were America's icons of military and economic power.”

“Our response involves far more than instant retaliation and isolated strikes. Americans should not expect one battle, but a lengthy campaign unlike any other we have ever seen. It may include dramatic strikes visible on TV and covert operations secret even in success.”

Mind is the forerunner of all actions.
All deeds are led by mind, created by mind.
If one speaks or acts with a corrupt mind,
Suffering followers,
As the wheel follows the hoof of an ox pulling a cart.

Mind is the forerunner of all actions.
All deeds are led by mind, created by mind.
If one speaks or acts with a serene mind,
Happiness follows,
As surely as one’s shadow.

TFK: Tell us about your upcoming book.
Mattie: It's focused on hope, hope through heartsongs. Because of what just happened to our country, I hope that people will read it and get a sense of new feelings and not just cower back and have it ruin their entire life. But not face it angrily. We cannot win this war on terrorism with bombs, we have to win it with words.

"The way of peace is the way of truth. Truthfulness is even more important than peacefulness. Indeed, lying is the mother of violence. A truthful man cannot long remain violent. He will perceive in the course of his search that he has no need to be violent and he will further discover that so long as there is the slightest trace of violence in him, he will fail to find the truth he is searching."

065:024 And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear.
065:025 The wolf and the lamb shall feed together, and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock: and dust shall be the serpent's meat. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the LORD.
011:006 The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.

Snowballs Replace Bullets as Snow Hits Holy Land
Tue, Feb 25, 2003
JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Witness to centuries of bloodshed, the ancient walls of Jerusalem's Old City saw only white Tuesday as Palestinians and Israelis traded snowballs instead of stones and bullets.

The exchange -- between Palestinian youths and Israeli passers-by at the ancient Dung Gate -- came in celebration of a rare heavy snowstorm that brought much of the Holy Land to a standstill, offering a respite from 29 months of fighting.

"This sort of thing gives everyone perspective. It makes people focus on what they have in common rather than politics," veteran Israeli meteorologist Danny Roup told Reuters.

Across the West Bank, the strongest cold front in a least a decade brought snow as deep as 12 inches, almost unimaginable in a region better known for balmy winters.

Having followed weather reports for days, schools and most businesses in Israel and the West Bank never opened their doors. The silence was interrupted only by the squeals of children, among them toddlers swaddled up by their parents for what was for some a first glimpse of snow.

In the stillness of Jerusalem's Old City, Jewish, Christian and Muslim faithful shuffled through sleet, past palm trees with frosted fronds, until finally reaching their places of worship.

011:006 The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them.

"In the beginning of all things wisdom and knowledge were with the animals, for Tirawa, the One Above, did not speak directly to man. He sent certain animals to tell men that he showed himself through the beasts, and that from them, and from the stars and the sun and the moon should man learn .... all things tell of Tirawa."

The lioness and the oryx
Monday, 7 January, 2002, 11:41 GMT
A lioness in central Kenya has baffled wildlife experts by adopting a baby oryx, a kind of small antelope normally preyed upon by big cats.

Reports say the full-grown lioness came across the oryx two weeks ago in the Samburu Game Reserve, scaring off its mother.

Instead of then attacking the defenceless calf, the lioness adopted the baby, protecting it from other predators, including a leopard.

Extraordinarily, the lioness still allowed the mother oryx occasionally to come and feed her calf before chasing her away. But the rule of the wild ultimately prevailed on Sunday when a male lion attacked and killed the baby oryx while the lioness was sleeping.

Kenyan lion adopts second antelope
SAMBURU, 18 February 2002
A Kenyan lion which baffled experts last month by playing mother to a baby antelope, has adopted yet another of the animals.

SAMBURU: Witnesses at Kenya's Samburu Game reserve say the lioness had been seen this week walking with and showing affection to a baby oryx - a species of antelope - as if it were her own cub.

Lioness adopts third baby antelope
Monday, 1 April, 2002, 14:00 GMT 15:00 UK
A lioness in Kenya has adopted another baby oryx - her third in as many months, game wardens at the northern Samburu National Park have reported.

The lioness is said to allow a female oryx several minutes each day to feed the new-born calf.

The lioness is said to be "fiercely protective" of the oryx - becoming very aggressive when any human come near.

Three adult onyxes have been seen near the unlikely duo though, one of which is believed to be the mother.

When the last calf was eaten by a male lion while she slept, the lioness was said to have been stricken with grief - she went around roaring in anger.

Local newspapers have noted that all three adoptions occurred on significant days - Christmas, Valentine's Day and Good Friday.

Lion + Oryx = Oryx-ymoron
Cats In The News, February 12, 2002
No scientific explanation has yet been offered for the strange friendship although a few theories have been discussed amongst researchers:

"A partial explanation to the phenomenon could be that the oryx calf never fled the lioness. Thus her hunting behavior was never initialized. Under some circumstances, the predator needs the prey to flee, before the hunting instincts, chase and kill, are evoked," Ditte Lisbjerg, an animal behavior scientist who works with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Nairobi, told Environment News Service.

"And because this did not happen there is a possibility that the lion started treating the oryx as a friend," claimed Richard Maingi, a postgraduate student at Moi University's Wildlife Conservation Unit.

Kenyan nature expert Vincent Kapeen has another explanation: "I think the lioness spared the calf after its mother fled because all animals have a special instinct to care for the young."

Lioness's special love for antelope
Mon Oct 7,12:52 PM ET
NAIROBI (Reuters) - It's nurture over nature for a lioness in Kenya which keeps choosing to dote on baby antelope rather than devour them.

Kamuniak, a lioness in northern Kenya's Samburu National Park, has adopted her fifth new-born oryx this year, a Kenya Wildlife Service warden has told Reuters. She is seen in this picture with the baby oryx she adopted in January. REUTERS/MARTIN K TELEWA Kamuniak, a lioness in northern Kenya's Samburu National Park has adopted her fifth new-born oryx this year, a Kenya Wildlife Service warden told Reuters on Monday.

The oryx is a type of African antelope more likely to be viewed by lions as lunch than a little one to mother. Kamuniak, whose name means "the blessed one" in the local Samburu language, has been adopting oryxes since the start of the year.

On each occasion she has tried to protect the calves from other predators and even allowed their natural mothers to come and feed them. But eventually the calves escape with the help of their natural mothers, are rescued by park wardens or in one case made into a snack by a male lion while Kamuniak napped.

The wardens think Kamuniak's adoption of the little calf nicknamed Naisimari ("Taken by Force") took place at the weekend after they saw the two together on Monday morning.

"She must have adopted her yesterday because they are in harmony," Samburu warden Gabriel Lepariyo said.

Naisimari's natural mother has been seen following her offspring and its unlikely surrogate parent at a distance.

A Purpose of Peace
Best-selling Boy Poet Promotes Peace
N E W Y O R K, Nov. 16 — In some ways, Mattie Stepanek is like many 11-year-olds — obsessed with all things Harry Potter — but in his own way, he's more magical than the fictional boy wizard.

Mattie's body suffers with a rare form of muscular dystrophy, but his words exhibit an incredible inner strength.

"When I was born, people were questioning whether or not I would live," Mattie said. "I would stop breathing a whole lot."

Mattie needs a ventilator and a wheelchair, and has been in and out of comas. In a sense, his whole life has been a recovery.

When he was only 3, he began writing poems because it helped him get through days where he could barely get out of bed.

Since then he has written two poetry books, Heartsongs and Journey Through Heartsongs. Talk show host Oprah Winfrey held up his newest book on her show last month, and it became a best seller.

Mattie has survived some incredible challenges in his short life. Aside from his own struggle, he has lost a sister and two brothers to the same disease. His mother, Jeni Stepanek, has a less serious form of the disease and passed it on to the children unwittingly.

Mattie admits that sometimes he wonders why it happened to him. "Sometimes I will think why me? Why did my brothers and sister die? Why am I stuck in this wheelchair? But then again, I think why not me?" he said.

Mattie said it's better that he struggles with the disease, instead of another little baby.

"We all have life storms, and when we get through them or recover from them we should celebrate that we got through it instead of just mourning and waiting for the next one to come along and wipe us out again," he said.

Mattie said that he has been close to death so many times that he has seen heaven, "angels and all." He remembers the angels' beauty: "Eternal beauty, not just outer beauty but inner beauty," he said.

Mattie Stepanek: Living his dreams
February 7, 2002
Greatest accomplishment: "My greatest accomplishment to date is being alive," Mattie exclaimed. "There have been so many close calls on my life and I am still here and living and doing things and spreading my message of peace and hope." His book, "Journey Through Heartsongs," hit No. 1 on the New York Times Best-Seller list. He also earned a first-degree black belt in martial arts and served as the keynote speaker at several conferences.

Mattie Stepanek, poet
TFK: What do you like about writing?
Mattie: It's a great way of expressing yourself in a way others can understand so that they can get through the same situation if it's bad.

TFK: What do you hope people will learn from your poetry?
Mattie: Life is a gift. We have to make the best of it and do what we're meant to do. I hope they will learn to remember to play after every storm. We all have life storms and we need to celebrate that we get through them, instead of mourning and being ready to be crushed by the next one.

TFK: What do you tell kids who think poetry is too tough to understand?
Mattie: It's not, it's your inner feelings, it's your life experiences. And those who still think it's tough after that, then try this: describe a tree, using all five senses without general words, like green, leaf branch or twig, or anything like that.

The Language of God
Do you know what
Language God speaks?
God speaks Every-Language.
That's because God made
Everyone and Gave
Everyone different Languages
And God understands all of them.
And do you know what is God's
Favorite Language?
God's favorite language is
Not grown-ups's language,
But the Language of Children.
That's because children
Are special to God.
Children know how to share,
And they never lose
Their Heart-Songs.

From the book Journey Through Heartsongs by Mattie J.T. Stepanek

I have a song, deep in my heart,
And only I can hear it.
If I close my eyes and sit very still
It is so easy to listen to my song.
When my eyes are open and
I am so busy and moving and busy,
If I take time and listen very hard,
I can still hear my Heartsong.
It makes me feel happy.
Happier than ever.
Happier than everywhere
And everything and everyone
In the whole wide world
Happy like thinking about Going to Heaven when I die.
My Heartsong sounds like this:

I love you! I love you!
How happy you can be!
How happy you can make
The whole world be!

And sometimes it's other
Tunes and words, too,
But it always sings the
Same special feeling to me.
It makes me think of
Jamie, and Katie and Stevie,
And other wonderful things.
This is my special song.
But do you know what?
All people have a special song
Inside their hearts!
Everyone in the whole wide world
Has a special Heartsong.
If you believe in magical, musical hearts,
And if you believe you can be happy,
Then you, too, will hear your song.

When I Die (Part II)
From the book Journey Through Heartsongs, by Mattie J.T. Stepanek

When I die, I want to be
A child in Heaven.
I want to be
A ten-year-old cherub.
I want to be
A hero in Heaven,
And a peacemaker,
Just like my goal on Earth.
I will ask God if I can
Help the people in Purgatory.
I will help them think,
About their life,
And their spirits,
About their future.
I will help them
Hear their Heartsongs again,
So they can finally
See the face of God,
So soon.
When I die,
I want to be,
Just like I want to be
Here in Earth.
